John Comer
|
Born
in Washington D.C., John Comer moved to Southern California in
1956, where he grew up surfing the beaches of Orange County and
hiking the arroyos and hills. He received his first box of oil
paints on his two 13th birthday, and has spent his life pursuing
his two passions: art and the sea.
His professional career began in 1968 and has been intermingled
with sailing and painting voyages to the Caribbean, Central America,
The Pacific Ocean and Africa. Comer paints the landscapes of
California, both as it has been created by nature and has it
has been altered by man. He paints wildflowers, forests and beaches,
as well as freeways, on-ramps and apartment buildings.
His work covers the spectrum of the California landscape, from
wilderness to city, paying homage to the idyllic light that has
captivated generations of California painters.
John Comer graduated from the University of Santa Barbara of
California. In 1988, Comer met Ray Strong through fellow painter
Michael Drury, whose influence became instrumental in Comer's
career development. His collectors among others include Jeff
Bridges, George Stern, Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital and The
Nature Conservancy. Comer has had many solo exhibitions which
the latest include the "Land & Legacy" Monterey
Museum of Art, Fine Art Dealers of America Show, LA, and "on
Location in Malibu" - C.A.C. Phippen Museum, AZ. |
