The Dutch School of chiaroscuro painting holds the most mysterious and dramatic effects of light and shadow. Light and dark is the English translation, literally. These Dutch paintings have been a source of
inspiration throughout my studies; specifically, Rembrandt and Willem Kalf.
Savoring the lushest brushstrokes and brightest lights for the area of focus achieves a feeling of duality. That is tranquility and excitement. This is accomplished by using mostly dark tones, several very light tones, and none or few in the middle range. Technique and materials in painting are as important as the result. I prefer using materials set down by the masters and proved by the test of time. Fine lead-primed linens, pure pigments, and resin/oil medium allows the paint to take on a certain glowing quality.
The chiaroscuro technique illuminates the focus area with a strong light. Therefore, all other areas are painted with less detail, lower values, and intensity of color, giving a mysterious appearance. By selecting only a few objects, putting one or two in the important focus area, I can achieve a strong but simple composition. By combining the various techniques and using a superior selection of material, I am able to attain the beautiful and evocative quality of chiaroscuro painting.
